Why Does a Sinus Infection Headache Occur

Author: Wangeci Kinyanjui

Having a headache simply means experiencing an ache or pain in the head. This situation usually occurs due to various malfunctions of the body system one of them being, having a sinus infection. A sinus infection refers to the inflammation of the sinuses in the body where by their linings are forced to swell up and cause an obstruction of air going to the sinuses. This condition makes it hard for one to breathe and in the process a lot of other complications such as nasal congestion, fever, constant coughing and sneezing start taking place.

A sinus infection headache however seems to be different from the other types of headaches. This type of headache tends to increase its severity whenever you bend over or during the time coughing takes place but on other times, the pain appears to be a bit dull rather than its usual nature of having a piercing or knife-like effect on the person's head.

Since a sinus infection headache will always be triggered by the inflammation of the sinuses, the position in the head where the pain is being felt usually helps to determine which pair of sinuses have been infected. This is possible since nerves attached to the sinuses are also attached to the head skull and therefore,  When the pain is being felt around your forehead, the most probable infected sinuses have to be the frontal pair of sinuses. The reason for saying this is that, these sinuses are situated over the eyes and when infected, one would expect the pain to be around the forehead. When pain coming from the sinus infection headache is being felt in the area between and behind your eyes, then the most likely sinuses that have been infected should be the ethmoid sinuses since they are the ones that are located in the deeper recesses of the nose.

Infection of maxillary sinuses believed to be situated in the middle part of your face, below the eyes and to the side of your nose, often cause pain to be felt across your face and according to medical reports, the maxillary sinuses appear to be the ones that get infected most of the time. Doctors always ask for this symptom when conducting a diagnosis to accertain that indeed you are suffering from a sinus infection. However, occasionally, a rare occurrence of a sinus infection headache can also take place in the back part of your head. This type of headache occurs when the deepest situated pair of sinuses known as the sphenoid sinuses get infected.

Having a sinus infection headache, most of the time serves as an indication that the sinus infection is worsening and that appropriate treatment should be looked for by the patient.

Pain relievers such as paracetamals and asprin may be used to ease the effect of the sinus infection headache on the patient but to get rid of this problem once and for all is through curing the infection itself. This can be achieved by taking antibiotics such as Amoxillins which are used to treat sinus infection brought about by bacteria present in the respiratory tract. Nasal sprays like Neosynephrine and Afrin can also be used to treat the sinus infection by shrinking the swellings that block air from reaching the sinuses hence in the process, preventing sinus infections and in the end curing the sinus infection headache.

  1. Neck Pain, back of head pain, sinus/ear pressure due to inflammation of Eustachian tube these related?
The back of my tongue is kind of white and dry feeling, and I have been feeling this for a few days now, my mom suggest it is the Flonase that I have been taking as well as MusinexD for a inner Ear inflammation in the Eustachian tube. I also have had pressure at the back of my head and a sore painful neck that has nearly gone away. Also I have had feelings of vertigo/dizziness. I also have been taking 400Mg of ibuprofen 3-4 times a day for the past 4 days. Also to note my top wisdom teeth are coming in and my bottom ones just came in, what might you think all these symptoms could be?

  2. really bad sinus pain in the back of head and around eyes?
    what are the causes/prevention?

    • There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

      Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don’t treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves’ juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.
      It may disappear naturally too.

  3. Can sinus pressure cause pain in the back of your head?
I think I may have a sinus infection but i’m not sure. I have pressure in my forehead and across my nose, in my cheeks. However, I also have a sharp pain above/behind my right ear and into the base of my head. Could this be caused by sinus problems too? What type of pain can sinus problems be responsible for? Maybe this pain is something else?

    • Am a bit disappointed in some of the answers appearing here. The sinuses are within the bone. Spaces. External manipulation does not go through bone.

What you outline here is a fairly common distress and is too often misdiagnosed as a sinus problem.. Yet does not respond to sinus treatments.

You have outlined the course of the facial nerve. You can verify this feature simply by finding the notch in the eyebrow and pressing on it. There is another notch on the inner aspect of the prominence of the cheek bone. If you check each area you will find it corresponds with the pain above the ear. Can next check at the base of the skull and will find the same degree of tenderness when applying pressure to that area.

We have now outlined at least 2 of the cranial nerves being inflamed. There is little doubt that other of the cranial nerves are also being effected by this inflammatory process. The facial nerve exits through those notches, as outlined above. The nerve above the ear is the auricular nerve. It can create a very hot pain when you move a certain way and touch it with that motion.

It appears you have the problem primarily of the right side. Which indicates you have a a pretty evident postural discrepancy. That soreness at the base of the skull indicates where the muscles attach to the skull and are under constant tension, just to keep your head pulled toward the center or, maintain the head above the feet. You will notice a balance problem just by putting your feet together and then closing your eyes. Presently you keep your balance by keeping the feet pretty well separated. You also may be aware of being more comfortable by standing on one leg rather than the other. All indicating a postural discrepancy.

Would suggest a visit to see a doctor of Chiropractic and see if this can be easily corrected. It will continue to progress if not treated appropriately.

  4. 46 yr.old,Wht.Female,97-105lbs.-Neck pain,head throbbing,sinus pressure,no stuffiness,lower back & thigh pain?
I am having pains in my neck that go from my neck to the front of my head and into my sinus area, where I feel tremondous pressure, and a throbbing headache all over, and I’m also having pains in my lower back that shoot down into both of my thighs. But, my nose isn’t stuffed up like it’s a sinus infection. I’m thinking it has something to do with my spine, maybe a pinched nerve, or something like that. All the symptoms started at the same time, so I’m assuming they are all related somehow. Help!!!!

  5. pain behind right eye and sinus when I scratch the back of my head?
I know I have sinus problems, my right side is mostly blocked up, but sometimes it clears, but I still got this pain when I scratch my head, and I have the pain behind my eye and a draining sensation in my right nasal passage.
Anybody knows why that happens when I touch my head?
    Thanks!

For sure no doubt: you have Occipital Neuralgia– inflammation of the nerves in the head-

Look up the Occipital nerve and it is probably that entire area- I have it and blamed it on sinus, etc.

Did you have a recent fall in where u twisted or hurt your neck-
or moved really fast? What they can do for you is just give you a shot of Lidocaine in that area – It works wonders!!!
